Music Monday: Love Story (Taylor’s Version) and the Scheduling Nonsense That Ruined My Life
There’s something about that swelling orchestration, that breathless key change, that full-tilt declaration of "It's a love story, baby just say yes". Apparently, I needed to relive every intense teenage emotion I’ve ever had—on repeat.
42 plays. Zero regrets.
It’s the kind of song that makes you believe in running through the rain for someone. The kind of song that pairs well with being emotionally obliterated by… oh I don’t know… a tennis schedule that shows zero respect for your wellbeing.
Because let’s talk about Tuesday.
Let’s talk about Queen’s and Halle.
Let’s talk about how the tournament schedulers clearly do not care about me personally.
Behold:
13:30 – Ben “Sunshine” Shelton (Queen’s)
14:30 – Jannik Sinner (Halle)
15:00 – Carlos Alcaraz vs Foki (Queen’s)
15:00 – Vavassori/Bolelli doubles (Halle)
That’s four must-watch matches in the span of ninety minutes, across two tournaments.
How am I supposed to choose between Carlos chaos, Jannik precision, Foki flair, Italian doubles magic, and the serve-and-smile energy that is Ben Shelton?
The answer is: I can't.
There will be tabs. There will be streams. There will be suffering.
So this week’s Music Monday theme is tragic love - the love I have for tennis, and the tragic way it betrays me with schedule overlaps that feel like personal slights. Taylor understood. I feel like Juliet on the battlements, except instead of Verona, I’m in front of three screens whispering “baby just say yes” to all of them.
Happy Music Monday. I’ll be horizontal, emotionally shredded, and trying to stream four matches at once.
[Edit to add:]
I regret to inform you that the scheduling chaos is even worse than previously reported.
Over in Berlin, Sara Errani/Jasmine Paolini are also playing at 13:30, which now overlaps with Ben Shelton. And then at 15:00, Diana Shnaider is playing as well—at the exact same time as Alcaraz v Foki and the Italian doubles team.
So to recap, my updated Tuesday viewing choices include:
- Ben Shelton (Queen’s)
- Sara Errani / Jasmine Paolini (Berlin)
- Jannik Sinner (Halle)
- Carlos Alcaraz v Foki (Queen’s)
- Vavassori / Bolelli (Queen’s)
- Diana Shnaider (Berlin)
I’ve gone from mildly overwhelmed to actively oppressed.
I am but one gay with a playlist and a dream. This is scheduling violence.

Explicit vs Suggestive

There are many shades of suggestive.

Explicit...well now, some work is a little more explicit than others.
( NSFW )
My current WIP is turning out barely suggestive and I'd really really like to have at least one explicit scene.
I can't get the characters to cooperate. *sigh* Has that ever happened to you? Or maybe the reverse? You meant to write a gen story but the characters insisted on getting naked? (Yes, that has happened to me too) Damn characters just seem to take over.

The Friday Five
1. What item would you be embarrassed for people to know you own?
I'd be a tad embarrassed for my adult kids to know about all the slash fanfic I've written.
2. What is something you splurged on just for you?
I just splurged on a brand new Sealy Posturepedic mattress.
3. What is something that you own with no real world value that is priceless to you?
Aw, I still have pottery pieces my kids made in school. I cherish them.
4. Do you collect anything?
Nope.
5. What item belonging to a friend/family member do you covet?
Nothing. Coveting things isn't in my nature. I can like or admire something without coveting it. For me personally, the whole 'coveting' thing is a huge waste of emotional time. I've got better things to do. (Like writing that slash I'm hiding from my kids)

Snippet:
″Ray? Are you all right?″
″I’m fine, the truck is not. It’s going to need more work than I thought. I’m still at the garage.″
″It’s late. You want me to come get you?″
″No. Jimmy’s trying to get me a loaner.″
″I’d offer to let you use the Jeep, but it actually belongs to the service. I’m not allowed to loan it out even to you.″
″I know. Look, I’ll call you before I leave here. Why don’t you go ahead and have supper. I’ll heat something up when I get home.″
″I’ll wait.″
″You don’t have to.″
″I want to. I don’t enjoy eating alone, Ray.″
That small confession warmed Ray’s heart. He felt the same way. When he ate alone, the food had no real taste anymore. He wasn’t sure when that happened, but he didn’t much care. He just knew that Ben was all the flavor he needed in his life. ″I’ll try to get home as soon as possible then.″
″I’ll be waiting.″

Working with or without a Plan

Are you planning out every detail of your story? Or writing on the fly carried by inspiration? A little of both?**
I have notes all over the place. When an idea hits I'll jot it down on anything handy. I should really work on being more organized.
That might explain why my current WIP is looking a little bit too much like the crime board picture. I don't even know how that happened. *facepalm*
It didn't start out with a mystery to be solved. It wasn't planned. That was a damn throwaway line.
I'm pushing through it, and I still like the story I'm working on, but a clear path forward would sure as hell help. Still, progress is happening.

**I refer to writing a lot because that's what I'm working on, but dusting off works in progress also includes art, podfic, or any other creative work.
